Week 5 - February

Getting into print work

New week, new work, and a bunch of new things to learn. This week I got to work on a packaging design project for a premium fragrance brand. It was my first time creating actual artwork files for manufacturers, and I learnt so many small and big things along the way. Things like how to set up print files, how to layer them properly for production, and how to clearly mark every treatment the packaging needs.

Luxury packaging comes with its own set of detailing. I got to understand how microtextures are created in Illustrator, how to layer them carefully, and how to make the files clean and readable for the printer. I also learnt how to pick the right Pantone swatches that feel cohesive with the product and its identity. It was a full range of packaging so there was a lot to keep track of. Since these files go straight to print, the margin for error was basically zero. It was a high-pressure, super-precise job, but with my mentor’s help, the process felt smooth and manageable.

Outside of client work, we also worked on some design challenges. We picked up a few identity briefs from platforms like Modern Brief and Designer Briefs on Instagram. These are hypothetical projects, but they really help us stay fresh and try out different directions. Every brand is different, and these challenges help us sharpen our thinking while still putting our own style into the mix.

Personally, I’ve also been trying to find better balance again. I kept myself busy with sports this week, which helps me feel fresher during work and also gives me some much-needed social time. Working from home can be isolating sometimes, so I’ve been joining a few sports communities and meeting new people. Playing with people is honestly one of the best ways to connect, and it’s been nice to be around that kind of energy
